Description

While mental illness is beginning to be discussed more openly, and featured in the media, I still think there is room for improvement. I was particularly interested in the discussion of the relation between health and weight, exercise and weight. This is a book I wish I had had when I was younger, maybe when I slim fasted at age 13 (effing hell! This is must read content for women looking to expand the understanding of the anti diet world or who may simply be open to healing their relationship with their body.

Here’s the sneaky thing about dieting and the human experience of having a body — we want to believe there is a way to fix how our bodies look and feel. Thank you to NetGalley and Harper 360, HQ for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. It was difficult to choose, and I found myself wanting to make this a list of 20, 30, or even 40 quotes, but I tried to be strict with myself. You are not a ‘before’ picture…We are living, breathing, multi-faceted, talented human beings whose true beauty cannot be captured in a picture…Our bodies are merely the vessels that hold all the good stuff.

Your guide to staying entertained, from live shows and outdoor fun to the newest in museums, movies, TV, books, dining, and more. I was a true chronic dieter, riding the fleeting highs and persistent lows and living off the hope I felt buoyed by when I discovered a new diet.

Ebooks fulfilled through Glose cannot be printed, downloaded as PDF, or read in other digital readers (like Kindle or Nook).Short, simple and sweet, this is one of my favourite quotes in ‘You Are Not a Before Picture’ because it’s a reminder we all need sometimes.

To access your ebook(s) after purchasing, you can download the free Glose app or read instantly on your browser by logging into Glose. It’s a great intro to body positivity and body acceptance for anyone looking to get started on changing their body image.

An urgent, enlightening and empowering guide to disavowing diet culture and learning to make peace with our bodies, from body confidence and anti-diet advocate Alex Light. So whether it is mental illness or merely mental health, a bad day or a bad year, let's make this a place to approach it and strip it back. She traces the word diet throughout history, and talks about the ways specific body types were favored in different parts of the world at different times. She shares a lot of great advice and lists many resources to continue your journey to being your authentic self.

From a very young age, we are all conditioned by the diet culture message which is exaggerated through the use of social media. The dominance of diet and exercise programmes and the detrimental effect they have, the powerful algorithms employed by social media and advertising, demonising foods and eating, our perceptions of what healthy looks like are all examined in detail in this book. Everyone needs to read it and I am already compiling a long list of people I want to personally send it to.The author charts her own journey with weight gain and loss, offering personal insights and anecdotes. Admittedly the book itself is a little repetitive, there are lots of caveats (the author frequently acknowledges her privilege), and some might find it a little too self-helpy, but I still think it’s brilliant and will be recommending it to everyone. I will be reading and rereading this book, either in part or in whole throughout the year, especially around the holidays where food is aplenty and shame abounds. Discover what helped Alex learn to love herself and no longer give a damn about what anyone says about her body.
