Description

NASA reported an air leak from the International Space Station during Expedition 63. The source of the leak was traced to the Zvezda module, but its exact location was unknown. [84]

On December 14, 2022, Cosmonauts Dmitry Petelin and Sergey Prokopyev were preparing for a spacewalk when a leak was detected on the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft. After inspection by Canadarm2 and the European Robotic Arm, [86] NASA announced on December 19, 2022, "A small hole was observed, and the surface of the radiator around the hole showed discoloration". [87] Roscosmos said that there was a hole about 0.8 millimetres in diameter that caused the temperatures in MS-22 to go above 30 degrees celsius. [88] The cause of the hole and leak is under investigation however Roscosmos suspects micrometeoroids to be a potential cause. [89] In January 2023 it was decided by NASA and Roscosmos to replace MS-22 with Soyuz MS-23. As an interim measure in case of an emergency evacuation is required, the seat of NASA Astronaut Frank Rubio will be moved to Crew Dragon Endurance with SpaceX Crew-5 while Prokopyev and Petelin would return to earth on MS-22. Once MS-23 arrives, the seats of Prokopyev, Petelin and Rubio would be moved to MS-23. As well, Sergei Krikalev of Roscosmos stated that the crew of MS-22 would have their mission extended by "at least, several more months" to allow the preparation of Soyuz MS-24. [90] In 2003, VanderMeer married Ann Kennedy, then editor for the small Buzzcity Press and magazine the Silver Web. The couple lives in Tallahassee, Florida. [update] They have two cats. [44] [43] Awards For any adventurous fan of sci-fi, fantasy, and/or horror, this book offers not only a rewarding read but, like, a thing to possess."and he compared notes with Moss, because their moves through fluid states were similar, even if his was a kind of fight against evaporation or ejection and hers an overabundance of accretion, a building up. Flesh was quantum. Flesh was contaminated, body and mind. Chen dealt in probabilities on one side of his brain and impossibilities on the other. Because the probability was always that he would disintegrate into his constituent parts sooner rather than later. He had come to think of himself as a complex equation and a symphony both, and, really, what was the difference? The Gemini X prime crew was made up of astronauts John W. Young (left), command pilot, and Michael Collins, pilot. NASA The capsule had a malfunction during its return to Earth from the ISS Expedition 6 mission and performed a ballistic reentry. The crew was subjected to about 8 to 9 Gs during reentry. The capsule landed 500km (310mi) from the intended landing target. In addition, after landing the capsule was dragged about 15 metres (49ft) by its parachute and ended up on its side in a hard landing. Astronaut Don Pettit injured his shoulder and was placed on a stretcher in a rescue helicopter and did not take part in post-landing ceremonies. [69] [70] [71] During an early NASA vacuum test, Jim Leblanc’s pressurized suit began to lose air, leading to decompression. Within about 30 seconds, he passed out, but his coworkers fortunately were able to get to him in time to save his life. But for Chen, who whipped his left arm up toward the heavens and allowed that part of him that identified as “hand” to leave him, to spin up to the wing as a sharp spinning star and to intercept the flying thing—and to shatter it to pieces, which fell like shards of green glass or some brittle candy.

This will all be familiar to readers of 2017’s “ Borne,” in which VanderMeer introduced us to this richly imagined world, or last year’s addition, “The Strange Bird.” Having read those books isn’t required to understand this one — in “Borne,” the dead astronauts are simply window dressing, a trio of dusty spacesuits that serve as a landmark in the desert landscape. Here, in this City, there came a second wave in the form of a giant lizard and Grayson dealt with the surprise with a leap and a swipe of her arm, for there appeared a blade at the end of her hand and then a red line across a scaly throat. This lizard erupting from the sand was not biotech but natural bred and thus natural dead in disposition. Third U.S. lunar mission leaves pad without hitch", Eugene, OR – Register-Guard newspaper, 11 April 1970 All the echoes of the other times, what they said when things went well, scrubbing what they’d said when it didn’t.Some clarity of story does emerge in the second half of the book, where a woman named Sarah, living somewhere in the broken world's past, discovers Charlie X's journal. It has been thrown to her — or someone like her — down the timestream by Chen, in his escape from the Company. Through the journal and Sarah's less-fractured narration — she does, after all, come from a less-fractured place in the timestream — some of how Charlie X happened, and how the dead astronauts became the dead astronauts, emerges from the mosaic of the book like a fossil being carved out of the earth.

[140] [141] [142] [143]In 2017 VanderMeer released Borne, a "biotech apocalypse" novel [29] about a scavenger named Rachel trying to survive both a city "plunged into a primordial realm of myth, fable, and fairy tale" [11] and a five-story-tall flying bear named Mord. As with the Southern Reach trilogy, the novel was highly praised, with The Guardian saying, "VanderMeer’s recent work has been Ovidian in its underpinnings, exploring the radical transformation of life forms and the seams between them." [29] Publishers Weekly said the novel reads "like a dispatch from a world lodged somewhere between science fiction, myth, and a video game" and that with Borne Vandermeer has essentially invented a new literary genre, "weird literature." Mission Control temporarily experienced elation when the helicopter commander reported that the capsule had landed and the recovery team was setting down nearby. In their minds, they were mere minutes from opening the hatch and treating the cosmonauts to the sweet smells of home for the first time in three weeks. There’s no limit to where it might go next. There shall issue forth from the Company beasts and monsters and creatures that shift their form in ways that you cannot imagine. There shall come threats you cannot imagine.
