Not everyone will love 'Gravity' -- some for its simplicity, some for the scientific compromises made -- and that's perfectly okay too. Some of the most anticipated titles include Peter Jackson’s next installation of his Hobbit trilogy, Universal’s 47 Ronin, Disney’s Thor: The Dark World, Fox’s Walking With Dinosaurs, Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Warner Bros. Since it premiered at the Venice Film Festival in late August, Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity has become the most buzzed about movie in the industry.

But despite the masterful execution, dramatic visuals, unique sound design and incredible editing, Gravity is a masterpiece in technical engineering alone and has surprisingly hollow characterisation and a weak narrative. The entire film ends up feeling so much like a long take that I began forcing myself to pay attention to when there would finally be cuts. Gravity was, and still is, a boundary-pushing exercise although Cuaron, who aspired to be an astronaut when he was younger, didn't describe the movie as a "space film".

For others, it will be a profoundly human drama, with a fight for survival amidst the chaos and randomness of disaster and the forces of nature. Cuaron's powerful use of sound - or lack thereof - coupled with an impassioned score, only heightens the near-unbearable tension, whilst acclaimed cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki provides us with some stunning images, both of the earth from space, and of hardware disintegrating into a million tiny Lego-like pieces. If you want to watch Gravity in 3D then I have it and could run a Big Screen theatre for you to watch it one evening. It was a basic, high concept: throw a couple of stars in space, introduce them to peril and watch in hope that they will overcome adversity and make it back to earth, and in the skilful hands of director Alfonso Cuaron the idea became tantalising.and Angelina Jolie were still attached to the project, the plan was to shoot the movie with a 3D camera rig.

Ryan must gather her resolve and all the resources at her disposal to make it back to Earth and reconcile with her young daughter. Give me the likes of 'Die Hard', 'Speed', 'The Edge', 'The Descent', or 'The Grey' any day of the week, and I will immediately get sucked into the story. It puts the IMAX technique in the service of the story without ever sacrificing the essential human heartbeat, sketching a pared-down, urgent story of survival. To be honest, I never thought I was doing a science fiction movie," he told the BBC back in 2014 when the movie was jockeying for Oscars success. Now the couple’s only chance of survival is to reach the International Space Station before their oxygen runs out.
