When they first meet it’s a highly entertaining game of verbal tennis with Millicent’s hapless jobsworth social worker rushing to get the lobs.

After shocking events that have Millie once again in inescapable and grave danger, Jerry and Millie travel to Paris and Italy, to discover the truth of what really happened in her past, as they trade lines with each other from famous movies. While receiving help, she learns that cutting is a dangerous and stressful way to vent her anger and frustration.Until she realizes that she can't stay silent forever, and that maybe, just maybe she can get better. A chance sighting of a photo on the wall of a refurbished hotel saves Millicent’s life, well that and Jerome’s intervention.

CUT is an amazing first novel by Patricia McCormick that offers a glimpse inside the mind of a 15-year-old girl who cuts herself. One thing I would mention - you need to be alert while reading, there are many little clues that are not so obvious, very cleverly done!As a teenager she moved to London in the shadow of the Somalian Civil War where she quickly learnt the procedure she had undergone in her home country was not 'normal' in the west. The story brings us to understand why our heroine felt depressed in the first place and why she starts to feel better - but gives little clue as to why the depression would lead someone to start cutting themselves - in this case, she just happens to stumble across a suitable weapon at a pinnacle of her desperation. My first Chris Brookmyre read and it was enjoyable enough, once you suspended disbelief for long enough.
