A complex, page-turning psychological thriller, riddled with twists and turns, EPIPHANY JONES is also a superb dark comedy with a powerful emotional core.

Small things gave the world such an authentic feel: Neotnia having to constantly translate between John and Goeido; John's confusion over well behaved Neotnia's dog Inu is; the background plot of a brewing war between America and China playing out on TVs; the subtle mentions of a world slightly different from our own (the sky is littered with satellites, some still being built).Beautiful Shining People is a beautiful, well written story that is engaging, with very likeable characters. There were definitely a couple of twists I never saw coming, and while certain parts of the plot were a tad slow and a little too descriptive, as a whole I liked how everything was mapped out. It also offers an interesting meditation on future geopolitics and the role of technology in our increasingly complicated and connected world. It is to the goodness within individuals we need to look to curb the cruelness of the mob and preserve humanity as something above the base.

It’s a discovery that will take them from the neon streets of Tokyo to Hiroshima’s tragic past to the snowy mountains of Nagano, and from the safety of family to the machinations of Big Tech and man’s incessant struggle for power. The narrator is John, an a8 year old American coding genius who has come to Tokyo to sell his quantum code apps to Sony for a lot of money. Overall, though, this is entertaining enough and I enjoyed following the developing relationship between John and Neotina, but I scratched my head too often at some of the character and world-building choices to give it anything other than a cautious recommendation. For me, this novel poses some of those questions, but beyond the technology there is also a mysticism to the book that takes it into the different realm of being at its core an age-old love story, a Romeo and Juliet for a future age.
