Commenting on the young ‘wizards’ of Harry Potter, this great RSC actor clearly had his work cut out at times during filming but evidently enjoyed the experience! What a wonderful look into the mind of a talented man, interested in so many things, and able to express his thoughts with humor and flair. With his glittering eyes and striking looks, Rickman's presence on stage or screen is truly unforgettable. Quite how gripped the reader will be with these diaries will depend on their tolerance for actors and their fascination with themselves and each other – I couldn’t help zoning out at the lists of famous types spotted or spoken to at assorted parties and awards ceremonies. Rickman was an excellent actor, but it’s a diary with lots of dates, lots of mentions of famous people, lots of food and restaurants, lots of funerals, comments on acting technique, but not a lot of introspection.

I’ve stayed away from Harry Potter, which he loved and hated doing in equal measure it seems, but you can read extracts from the diaries about the films in the Guardian here. Sadly, I missed seeing Alan Rickman in Les Liaisons Dangereuses by a few weeks; Greg Hicks had recently taken over the role of the Vicomte de Valmont after the play transferred into the West End.

There was very little in the way of personal insights and if you didn't know the person to whom he was referring then it was hard to glean anything from it.

La lectura de sus memorias resulta en una experiencia satisfactoria para cualquier admirador de su trabajo y del arte interpretativo en sí mismo. But just when you think Rickman might be becoming insufferable, he has a knack of bursting the actorly bubble and saying something profound.Madly, Deeply also includes a foreword by Emma Thompson and a selection of Rickman's early diaries, dating from 1974 to 1982, when his acting life first began. He is especially poleaxed by the massacre at Dunblane, which he hears about while improbably holed up at a health spa. The experience of reading the diaries starts to become like chatting to an old friend once you get going and I often found myself laughing out loud at his sardonic observations of life. The late nights, bad meals at odd hours, room-service snacks, hang-overs and streaming colds; the jet lag, mounds of unopened mail, phones ringing incessantly; the ailing back and neck, stomach upsets, sweating, swellings, skin problems, vision and hearing issues: when cancer comes it is no surprise. He was a droll player of haughty villains, men who looked as if they were constantly detecting faraway stinks in the air.

Madly, Deeply features a photo insert, a foreword by Emma Thompson, and an afterword by Rima Horton.

Anyway, I think this book will appeal to many, but it is not for me, and it has nothing to do with Alan Rickman's thoughts, feelings or writing.

If you enjoy the name-dropping, the who’s who of the British theatre and film world, he’s your man – just don’t forget that most are his friends and peers as much as his colleagues. Maybe if he would have published them when he was alive it would have been a whole different matter. Usually, I only listen to audiobooks for long books, such as those by James Michener or David McCullough.

Harry Potter’s Severus Snape is one of the most nuanced characters (if not the most nuanced character) created by J. There are some editorial interventions intended to clarify who people are, or what film Rickman is talking about (etc. As she charts his career and hard-won success and explores his enigmatic personality, Alan Rickman's complex character is revealed more fully than ever before. He is a devoted sounding board for his friend Ruby Wax, and is blown away by the talents of Emma Thompson, with whom he appeared in Sense and Sensibility and Love Actually.
