Again, the word here is tension: both of them have a secret, and as they each dance around the other’s secret, they have to evaluate their feelings. It also makes sense for the intended young adult readers who are less familiar with these tropes anyway. She needs to make new friends, figure out who she can trust, figure out who she is and who wants to be, and figure out how to date a teenage boy when her dad doesn’t fully approve. I would run up and hug him, and he would kiss the top of my head, and for the first time in a long time, I would feel safe.

I frequently had to reread scenes because important events would occur within just a few sentences and I would be reading the character's reaction before I could even comprehend what had happened. This book has literally been sitting on my kindle for years and I’m disappointed that it took me this long to get to it, don’t let the same thing happen to you! I do like the second half, though, with Amanda coping with her identity and struggling with the truth.

But it’s okay because they too were genuinely lovely people, and I have to admit that Chloe was my favourite just because of the ONE scene where she’s an absolute bad-ass who’s taking no prisoners. She also has a mentor and role model from her trans support group, which such an important thing to show in trans narratives. Grant has to work a job after school to provide for them and Amanda sees him as a hard working, loyal, loving, family man and starts to really fall for him. That’s not to say that other trans people won’t find it validating or that this is not a good book or an important one.

Because the author is a trans woman herself, she is able to depict with nuance and realism the detailed physical and emotional experience of Amanda’s transition.Layla is the mother hen of the group, constantly doling out encouragement and advice, whether it’s regarding Amanda’s choice of bra for gym or the dress she should wear to prom. A few critics point out what Russo herself acknowledges in an author’s note that follows the text: the novel glosses over some of the obstacles faced by most trans teens—the protagonist has no issues passing, is able to get gender-confirming surgery at a very young age without financial difficulties, and finds a completely accepting community in the rural south. To be honest I haven’t read a ton of books with trans main characters, mostly because I’ve focused most of my attention on books by POC, and finding trans POC protagonists is like looking for a needle in a haystack. A nagging voice reminded me that I was only a half hour from home, that if I got off at the next stop and walked back to Smyrna, by sunset I could be in the comfort of my own bedroom, the familiar smell of Mom’s starchy cooking in the air.
