It won’t stand on its own if you’re intending to put it on a table, however, as there’s no rear-facing slant like the Echo Show 8. Interestingly they all come with a white cable for some reason, yet you can use the previous gen's power adapter too. This isn't something I can say about the latest Echos, as the Echo Studio, Echo (4th Gen) and, to a much lesser extent, the Dot (5th Gen) are all quite capable as music speakers. Smart home control, music playback, podcasts, news briefings, playing radio stations, setting multiple alarms, timers and various other little bits like that all work great.

Also, with its upgraded temperature and movement sensors, the Dot seems to be leading the smart home game.View image in fullscreen The new Echo Dot on the right is slightly larger in every dimension than the previous version on the left. This feature, when enabled, essentially gives you more time to finish speaking — Alexa's way of accommodating speech patterns like stuttering. It has all the other features of the new Echo Dot, too, including the temperature sensors and the ability to act as a Wi-Fi extender for Eero networks, plus a Zigbee radio. The fact that it can be listening in on your most private conversations — or else sneakily gather info like a credit card number you say when purchasing something over the phone — is legitimately scary.

The idea was to run a Routine that reads the weather and my calendar and then plays NPR in the morning when the shower starts, but the Routine would start playing at the smallest tinkle of running water (if you know what I mean). When my laptop connected to the Dot, I got speeds of 25Mbps up and 12 down in an area of my house where I would usually get 70 / 26 from my 1. In addition to playing music, the Echo allows you to control smart devices and communicate with loved ones via voice control. The deals here are updated and our community of enthusiastic bargain hunters made sure that you can use the Echo dot discount codes. When not testing out the latest gizmos, you’ll find Simon either catching up with the newest releases at his local cinema or out shooting with his beloved compact camera. I toggled it on and initially got a warning that the Dot was too close to an Eero and would not extend anything. The biggest improvement to the range is in the Echo Dot with Clock (which is the third version with a clock but with the fifth-gen speaker). The new design keeps the now-iconic blue ring light, but this time it's at the bottom of the unit and illuminates the base of the device, which looks neat.

The small LED panel has also been updated to include extras like the title of the song you’re listening to. Tell Alexa you love “her” and it will happily pump out a cheerful tune that finishes with the line: “Know that I’ll be there for you, as always, your trusty AI. Voice assistants can set alarms and timers, control other smart devices around your home, remind you of appointments. Most of these features are comparable with those available to Google Assistant and Google's Nest line of smart devices. The new temperature sensor can tell you the temperature in the room (and show you on the display) as well as trigger Alexa Routines.By downloading the appropriate App, and via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, it is in fact possible to connect compatible lights and appliances, manage them by issuing commands with your own voice, or even create a home theatre system with Fire TV. It does only have one microphone, and sometimes struggled to pick up our voice from a considerable distance across the room. It is occasionally overpowering when it comes to less bass-heavy tracks, so that’s something to be aware of, but with seven microphones, the Echo Studio always heard us, wherever we were in the room. Just like the older models, it features an LED display on the front which shows the time, but it’s not just a Dot with a Clock anymore. If you want something that displays all your family photos, can act as a bulletin board for messages, and play films and TV shows in the kitchen (if you’d rather this instead of a TV), it’s a great nifty device.

The opening acoustic guitar plucks in Yes’ “Roundabout” sound full and get plenty of low-mid resonance combined with a bit of high-mid clarity to bring out some string texture even if it isn’t very crisp. Meanwhile, the Pop was better when listening to voices -- with clearer vocals and better enunciation in podcasts or even just with Alexa's voice.

Even though the audio strength and quality of this device are lacking compared to its predecessors, it still provides great quality sound. The Echo Dot 5th Gen is one of the most popular smart speakers for several reasons: It's compact, it sounds decent, and it's affordable.
