Hugh Griffith stands out as a splendidly eccentric bargeman and Curt Jurgens as the main Baddie is obviously relishing his role as a cultured and charming sophisticate. The next few hours involve Garrett being treated as a guest, while he waits for the submarine to arrive.

Ian Carmichael gives a good performance in his role as David Garrett, the scientist who is totally unaware what is going to happen to him when he arrives at the area, while Janet Munro is decent as Maggie, the woman whose actions make her an unlikeable character. Ian Carmichael, Janet Munro and Curd Jürgens star in Cy Endfield’s thriller about a Cambridge professor who becomes involved in an dangerous game of cat and mouse while trying to track down an old friend. Imagine North by Northwest but with Ian Carmichael substituted for Cary Grant, Janet Munro for Eva-Marie Saint, Curt Jurgens for James Mason, a canal boat instead of a crop sprayer and cliffs along the coast of Yorkshire instead of Mount Rushmore. I haven’t seen my acquaintance for quite a few years, but Hide and Seek is the eighth Cy Endfield film I have watched over the last two or three years.

Cy Endfield directed this small comedy-thriller quite some time before his epic film, "Zulu", but it was not released until some six months after that large-scale production.

Garrett is starting to doubt he is in the correct place, when he sees Maggie talking to Richter and finds a room upstairs with a chessboard that is missing the knight piece he has.

There are shades of Alfred Hitchcock’s man on the run tales here (especially The 39 Steps, which the basic structure loosely resembles), sharing a similar sense of wry humour that runs throughout the story, an ever-so-slightly winking sensibility enhanced by the amount of comedy actors making up the supporting cast.

Needless to say it doesn't quite have the pizzazz of Hitchcock's masterpiece, but it does display Munro's willingness to disrobe on camera, something which I am sure The Master would have appreciated. Directed by the BAFTA-nominated Cy Endfield, whose credits include Zulu and Hell Drivers, Hide and Seek also stars Oscar winner Hugh Griffith, Bond villain Curd Jürgens and Golden Globe-winning British actress Janet Munro; the film is presented here in a brand-new transfer from the original elements, in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio.G. Wodehouse’s genial upper-class bumbler Bertie Wooster – heads a strong cast in this comedy Cold War thriller. Garrett starts to walk down the road and comes across a policeman on a bicycle who goes back to the cliff with him. Maggie then says she has to leave and Garrett leaves alone after copying down Maggie's phone number. Ian Carmichael made a wonderful career from playing well-meaning, naive and gullible young gentlemen, so my interest was piqued when I saw that Hide and Seek was billed as a 'thriller'.

Unknown to them, Garrett has rigged the alarm on his wristwatch to cause the boat to explode, killing the three henchmen.

When they approach the car they find the driver is Richter, who forces them into the car at gunpoint and they drive towards an isolated cliff top. When Melnicker notices two individuals enter the hall he is distracted and excuses himself for the lunch break. Maggie seems to be avoiding committing to anything and Garrett resigns himself to continuing on the train for the time being.
