How to Read states that the humorous aspects of Death Note originated from Ohba's "enjoyment of humorous stories". She knows, more or less, what is about to happen, but now that she is under the influence of the Death Note she is unable to do or say anything about it, seemingly aware of the situation yet powerless to do anything except carry out the fate written out for her.

According to a survey conducted in 2007 by the Ministry of culture of Japan, occupies the tenth place among the best manga of all time.
