I thought of Pulp first: to me this concept is quintessentially theirs, though also generally a 90s / Britpop phenom, and it has another parallel history in camp. I have read about the profound influence this work has had on some people and I can see why it may have had such a significant impact on them, but although I admire poetical language and would usually value prose over plot, I have mixed feelings about this little book - hence the three star rating - and I'm rather surprised that I didn't derive more from it than I did. But with the disillusion of everything that I believed I knew or know or thought, comes (this is a constant becoming, and not something that has finished with me yet) everything that I could not possibly have known and a learning and a discovery. I was torn between feeling tremendous empathy for her, and wanting to reach into the book and shake her. Sentences like those above were like some drug of addiction, and in chapters without (many) I found myself bratty and chair-kickingly bored from withdrawal, and had to consciously adjust to paying more attention to the world and difference to see the peculiarities of her experience. But it was also difficult not to feel frustrated by Smart, a woman so intoxicated by the poetic idea of love that it brought an apparent perversity to her actions – at times deserting her children to be with Barker, nigh-on prostrating herself before him. The speaker is self-aware enough to understand that she is moving against conventionality, but in her view, towards something more valuable. And through her eyes, it became easy to understand Barker's charm, and the wit and the humour that united them. This epiphany would eventually bring them together, and even though he was married, they would begin a love affair that would last for years, produce four children, and cause untold grief and heartache for everyone involved. It is the pile of dust under the bed, the dirty sheets that were never washed, that precipitate fatal action.

How can she walk through the streets, so vulnerable, so unknowing, and not have people and dogs and perpetual calamity following her? i read it last, of course, and it made me appreciate the book so much more in retrospect, and it also reminded me of the several parts i did enjoy. Nevertheless there are some - many - beautiful lines, a few of which immediately jumped out at me as being recognisable from Smiths songs, especially those used in 'What She Said' (a song particularly close to my heart because, as I may have mentioned before, for part of my A Level English coursework I wrote a dramatic monologue based on it.
