Deeper: Real Change for Real Sinners (Union)
About this deal
You think about all the things you “should” be doing, and, yes our habits in the Word and in prayer play a part, but a big part of our maturity is knowing and loving Christ. What I enjoyed most about this book is how practical it is, complete with questions to guide, examples of using those questions with two passages, and ideas to ponder so that you can set your mind on God, His son's redemptive plan, and the impact the Holy Spirit has in our hearts and minds when we CHOOSE to invite Him in. O ile początek słuchałam z zainteresowaniem, to niestety im dalej w las, tym czułam się zmęczona (trochę uratował to koci Łowca, bo to jedna z moich ulubionych postaci tutaj). He serves as an editor for the Knowing the Bible series and the Short Studies in Biblical Theology series, and is the author of several books, including Gentle and Lowly and Edwards on the Christian Life. After intense media interest around its launch, Tunnels was published in almost forty countries and was a New York Times Bestseller, achieving sales of more than a million copies worldwide.
But it does mean that one aspect of growing in Christ is bringing our subjective feelings of defilement into line with that objective, decisive, invincible, true-for-all-time-and-eternity cleansing in the blood of Christ. This lovely, easy-to-read primer by Dane Ortlund grounds our discipleship in the glowing center of Christianity—our Lord Jesus. You won’t find fast food here, it’s more like a full-course meal sitting around the table with family and friends, with necessary time to digest and relax between courses. Our sanctification is driven not by a need to earn our justification but from the outflow of the knowledge that we stand justified already.
Helps me think through my desire to take care of my sin but how Jesus already did it, as well as the fact that I just can’t. As I was reading this book, I found myself wishing Ortlund would be more practical—I wanted action steps I could do. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable.Drawing on wisdom from figures throughout church history, Ortlund encourages readers to fix their gaze on Jesus in the battle against sin, casting themselves upon his grace and living out their invincible identity in Christ. He is the author of Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers and Deeper: Real Change for Real Sinners . I am confident it will be in my top 5 books of 2024 and honestly might be my favorite (even though we’re only 9 days into the year). I reviewed one of the titles in this series before ( Rejoice and Tremble: The Surprising Good News of the Fear of the Lord) and thoroughly enjoyed it.
The TUNNELS series in general is probably one of the most realistic and grim YA universes out there. He suggests that church leaders read the full treatment and make the more accessible and concise version widely available to their congregations. If you’ve ever wondered what the Bible really means by ‘fixing our gaze on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith,’ this should be the next book you spend time with.
