I can’t be tardy to Lit again or I’ll get detention, and I told Kate I’d drop gum by her locker on the way. The entire book is self aware, finding and exploiting the faults in the classic rom-coms, while still show casing why we hold these faults dear to our hearts - in a refreshing way. Indeed, the book is as much a tale about small town greed, corruption, and a questionable mafia component, as it is about a really big fish. Better Than The Movies is a super cute YA contemporary novel and it’s light-hearted, fast to read, and addictive.

Synopsis (from Goodreads): Liz Buxbaum has always known that Wes Bennett was not boyfriend material. That's why we've added a new "Diverse Representations" section to our reviews that will be rolling out on an ongoing basis. So many of us wanted to grow up quickly but, now that we have, there's sometimes a wish that we could go back to when we just had to worry about school and who was crushing on us. My mom had made her famous cheesecake bars, and Michael had met us at the door and offered us drinks like he was a grown-up.We’re well aware that Stephen King despises Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of one of his most personal novels. She's having a really hard time with all of the "last" moments that high school has to offer and can't find a way to talk about it with her dad or best friend. They had the kind of back-and-forth banter that’s so hard to capture in a book, and Lynn wrote it perfectly.

He teeters between abject disgust for his human prey, desperation, madness, and a terrifying blankness behind his eyes. He looked like someone waiting for the punch line, and his confusion kicked up my happiness to an even higher level. Michael did a bro handshake with Wes—when had they had time to choreograph that little touch of adorability?

Definitely still read the books, but there’s just something awe-inspiring about seeing such an impressive ensemble cast act against the otherworldly beauty of New Zealand and some of Hollywood’s most skilled visual effects. He must’ve sensed a stalker in his midst, because the slo-mo stopped, the birds disappeared, and he looked right at me. She asks her neighbour and childhood frenemy Wes to help her out in exchange for the good parking spot they’ve been fighting over for months.

I felt closer to my mother when I watched them; it felt like a tiny piece of her was there, watching beside me. And as they continue to grow closer, she must reexamine everything she thought she knew about love-and rethink her own ideas of what Happily Ever After should look like. I felt at ease every time I picked up the book, these characters so unflinchingly real that they felt like my friends. She lives in Nebraska with her husband and pack of wild children, and when she isn’t reading or writing, odds are good she’s guzzling energy drinks and watching rom-coms. They each resort to all sorts of dirty tricks to keep the other from getting the spot, which was just hilarious.Liz’s relationships with Joss and Helena also suffer as Joss discovers Liz’s lies and Liz shuns Helena from her life for fear of replacing her mother. The story is everything you expect from a romance novel but it has so much heart to it and you just fall in love with Liz and Wes. A romantic comedy is quoted at the beginning of each chapter, and characters watch and/or discuss romcoms. When Wes invites Michael to a party, Liz realizes that Wes’s friendship with him can be the way to Michael’s heart. Many romcom cliches are included in the plot of Better Than the Movies, including a makeover, fake dating, and "enemies to lovers.

If surveyed, everyone on the planet would unanimously agree that the girl was beautiful; it was an indisputable fact. Even though his antics caught the attention of the neighborhood Facebook page—my dad was a group member—and the old gossips frothed with rage at their keyboards over the blights on the neighborhood landscape, not a single person had ever said anything to him or made him stop. Each chapter is introduced with a quote from a classic romance film and there is even a playlist at the end that goes with the story of the characters! They reminded me so much of various Taylor Swift early songs, if that makes sense, the ones from Debut and Fearless, and I really have to say this book reads like a Swift song. I really like books where it’s so obvious the guy has feelings/a crush and the female character just literally cannot see it, no matter what he does.

Van Morrison’s voice made swimming upstream in the busy hallway seem like it was a scene from a movie, as opposed to the royal pain that it actually was. The annoyingly attractive next-door neighbor might seem like a prime candidate for romantic-comedy fantasies, but Wes has only been a pain in Liz’s butt since they were kids.
