There’s clear animosity for both people’s partners, and I was just sad and uncomfortable for the both of them! Houston opened up the world for Crawford, exposing her to all the glamour, travel and interest that kind of fame can deliver.

Once a year or so, I fall down a serious Whitney Houston rabbit hole: rare tracks, YouTube videos, documentaries, articles… so reading Robyn Crawford’s memoir was a no-brainer.After analyzing my thoughts I have come to realize this book is the story of a woman that couldn’t save her friend so she saved herself. If it sounds like I'm bragging, I am) And of course I remember all of the long car trips in our conversion van in which my parents were up front listening to talk radio and I had to share our one Walkman (with the tape on the back to keep the batteries in and headphones that kept falling apart) with my brother and sister. There were Houston's first solo recordings, with the already-seasoned singer nailing the lead to "How Will I Know" in one take. This would be the pattern of their lives together for the next 10 years: Crawford as the person to whom Houston would turn as the pressures of fame intensified. As this once classy woman who had so much talent, that I watched and enjoyed as a child in the 80's and grew up listening to, turned into a shadow of her former self.

That was someone who was suffering from a broken heart and was trying to ask for help and even Robyn herself said Whitney had too much pride. After a long career in the music industry, Robyn Crawford is now focused on mental and physical wellness and writing. Robyn explained that she always wanted Whitney to perform “A song for you”, but Whitney didn’t feel she was ready as she was too young and inexperienced. Unfortunately we will never hear Whitney’s, but I assure you, there would be nothing for her to “defend. However, years later at the 1991 Welcome home heroes concert, Whitney sang this song and Robyn herself mentioned when she sang she sounded like she was in agony.

The coroner ruled her death to be accidental drowning, brought on in part by cocaine and heart disease. She adds, “If Whitney partnered with you, she didn’t try to do your job, she worked with you as a partner. They are simply living their authentic lives as people today are far more tolerant and empathetic, which is so refreshing and shows as a society how far we have come and how archaic this world once was. Months later, Crawford ran into LA Reid, the then head of Arista, who told her it was Houston who had nixed the job, because “she wasn’t comfortable with me bringing you in”. I think she finally decided so many years later to speak about her friendship with Whitney so the rest of the world could see the Whitney she knew.

It was also a time when mainstream stars had to be even more unimpeachably heterosexual, and Crawford’s visibility – she was always by Houston’s side – became the subject of increasingly frenzied speculation. According to multiple witnesses, Brown allegedly continued to be violent towards Houston and her drug use accelerated. I didn’t know that she and her mother were so disjointed, I mean— parents are how WE GET THROUGH LIFE, forrealz!

But then the more people came into it, and the bigger she got – you know, she’s not black enough, they’re always together, what’s going on there, she’s not dating anyone – all of that got bigger and bigger, and she rose. Whitney ended her physical relationship with Robyn but still needed her close, but eventually Robyn was driven out. These ladies were thick as thieves for 20+ years, but she doesn’t dish on Houston’s worst behaviors, and she doesn’t even bash Bobby Brown very much, which would have been easy to do, because Bobby Brown is an absolute piece of garbage. Well firstly there is no way a woman let alone anyone would allow someone who they have been intimate with in the past to be around their spouse (in this case Bobby Brown) yet alone in their lives (working relationship or not) unless they deeply cared for them, just no way! It’s an extraordinary response to an alleged threat of physical violence: that no one was thinking of Houston.
