Integrated into the shift drum, a Quickshifter sensor can be activated by pressing the QS marked button on the Map Select Switch to further aid smooth upshifting. Designed with precisely positioned inlet ducts aimed at reducing drag and air flow deformation, the airbox ensures unrestricted airflow with maximum filter protection.

Last year, this bike was third on our list, but we believe that was because we enlisted an even blend of vet riders to pros. The easy-to-operate Map Select Switch allows racers to quickly alter and set up the engine characteristics on a race by race basis dependent on track conditions and rider preference. The first gen was a longer-stroke motor with a slightly lower-revving engine, but the later models were higher-revving, shorter-stroke. Wholly owned in this context means 100% owned by the parent or through a chain of 100% owned corporations. Assembled with CNC-machined hubs, lightweight spokes, and strong, black-anodised alloy rims by Excel Takasago, the wheels of the FC 250 are then fitted with Dunlop Geomax MX33 Motocross tyres, which feature a proven block-within-a-block design for more progressive cornering and superior grip.
High performance 2-stroke simplicity, and the latest in technical innovations, ensure the TE 250 retains its position as a premium enduro machine. Last year the bike received refreshing updates that included a new frame, swingarm, motor package, hydraulic clutch and an electric starter. Inside the shock is a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) optimised main piston for improved initial comfort, which provides strong hold-up in all conditions.
Even then, those updates weren’t enough to challenge the other bikes—which have all been significantly improved since then—for even a podium position. Our GMC analogy from earlier shows that the GasGas is essentially a base model KTM—same engine, frame, swingarm and suspension (but the GasGas does have different suspension settings, and we’ll get to that).
The new chassis is stiff and precise, but the forks felt too soft, which also unweighted the rear end and made it feel too light and unpredictable. Additionally, the chain guard and chain slider have been designed for improved durability and are less prone to catching on external objects. All of our test riders praised the CRF250R’s motor due to its friendly nature and overall rideability. Differently sized holes in the shims, which feature updated stack settings for 2024 to improve balance and handling, allow them to open more easily which reduces the overall stress of the oil flow.The butter-smooth function of the suspension eats up chop for breakfast and allows the rest of the bike to dance harmoniously underneath the rider. On the other hand, it’s an excellent platform for riders who want to start on a budget but still want the same frame and engine components as a KTM or Husky. The basic troop carrier version was used as an armoured personnel carrier for reconnaissance units, carrying scout sections. A few pieces trickle over from the ’21, including the cable-operated clutch and a three-mode map switch. These were used by battalion and higher commanders as personal command vehicles, most famously the 250/3 used by Erwin Rommel in the North African campaign.
In the US, you’re more likely to find a CBR250RR, even though they were also only imported in similar years. I’m not sure that we’ll see this mean little Ninja in the United States, but I hope we do, if only to please a small subset of riders.Smooth and usable power is guaranteed thanks to electronic fuel injection delivering unrestricted performance in all conditions with the self adjusting system eliminating the need for jetting changes and pre-mixed fuel. It’s a great idea on paper, but it receives mixed opinions each year—the shorter riders enjoy it, and the taller riders aren’t often as excited. Each of the subsidiaries has to meet the business and gross revenue tests described in the first paragraph of this section.
