Whether it’s in a small group setting or individual tutoring online – a tutor can help them tackle any difficulties and give them the best chance of success. Typical questions include selecting synonyms, antonyms or homonyms from a given list, spotting the odd one out from a selection of words, or identifying the connection between groups of words.

As with all exams, starting preparation and revision as early as possible is an excellent way to get your child ready for their 11 Plus. Below is our free 11+ Vocabulary List, an enormous list of over 1,800 11+ words to help your child prepare. This helps to broaden their language and allows them to have a record of new words that they have learnt. This is partially because the topic is so large and varied that there isn’t (and could never be) a single book that would cover everything for a child. Your child will, therefore, need to have a diverse vocabulary to draw on for each aspect of their English exam.Parrots are gregarious and usually feed and roost in companies, but are at least temporarily monogamous. Sometimes finding a book related to something they’ve recently watched on TV or a film can be a good entry into it. It had some learning activities, revision and some really tough word puzzles which made our daughter really keep her vocabulary front of mind. At GoStudent, we have dedicated English tutors who can explain the questions in an entertaining and interesting manner so your child will walk into the exam feeling confident. Encourage your child to draw a visual interpretation of a word they find difficult – for instance, the word ‘economical’ may be associated with a picture of money, while ‘bewildered’ could be symbolised by a person looking confused.

They also come in a luxury box with high quality durable cardboard, so they can last longer and hold out against rips and tears. Our recommended course it The Complete Vocabulary Course as it helps build up your child’s skills over time with constant revision, however, there is a shorter Vocabulary Enhance Course and even shorter Vocabulary Boost Course if you have less time. Both GL and CEM expect children to demonstrate a strong vocabulary by using (or showing an understanding of) a wide range of difficult words. Most tutors do insist children do a great deal of vocabulary development work BUT parents must also do their bit by making sure children read every day at home, without the reading element the money spent on tutoring may well be wasted. At Explore Learning we’ve developed a comprehensive curriculum tailored to the requirements of your local school entrance exams.

One of the key elements that benefits children the most is having a rich and robust vocabulary, improving all areas of their communication: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Recognising lots of synonyms and antonyms will help them with both comprehension and being creative in their writing. Go down part of the list each week with your child, where a child can spell and accurately define a word move on.
