Straight Outta Compton), Christian Convery-Jennings ( Sweet Tooth), Alden Ehrenreich ( Solo: A Star Wars Story), Jesse Tyler Ferguson ( Modern Family), Brooklynn Prince ( The Florida Project), Isiah Whitlock Jr. Based on the true story of a bear that ate a block of cocaine, this is really the only true story part of the story – in real life the bear ate the cocaine and immediately died, whereas in Banks’ film, it goes on a bloodthirsty rampage, killing all who cross its path. They’ve been robbing tourists in the area for some time now, much to the dismay of a park ranger named Liz (Margo Martindale). However the image’s defining characteristic – and one noticeable from having seen an SDR version of the film digitally just a few weeks ago – is the massively high contrast colour grade the HDR pass further enhances.

This is all well and good, but the big fatal flaw with Cocaine Bear is that its pacing is all over the place. It's certainly not for all audiences, but for those to whom the title beckons, it should prove to be a riot of a time at the movies. The HDR10 grade doesn’t have a huge amount of highlights to be bothered with – the odd bright light of the plane cockpit in the opening few mins or the glistening reflections from the night-time waterfall at the film’s conclusion still have a real energy to them – instead seemingly focussed on eking out every last little bit of nuance in the colours, and especially in those darker scenes. The colors are equally well-defined, with strong saturation that never pushes past the point of oversaturation, and the contrast range is excellent.

Other than that, this comedy with blood and guts suffers from pacing issues in the first half of the movie. And while everyone is clearly in on the joke and bringing their very best wry sensibilities to bear (pun intended), it’s the least experienced cast members who deliver the most of both – Prince and a deliciously sweary Convery, bringing to mind the legendary Betty White’s potty mouthed Lake Placid resident, make for a hilarious double act as they discover the drug themselves, try and fail to take it and then are convinced that they’re now addicts in need of serious rehab; while Aaron Holliday, not even given a character name sadly, is gorgeously sweet and ferociously dim as the hostage of Ehrenreich and his partner in crime O’Shea Jackson Jnr as he tries to lead them through the park to some of the fallen stash while delightfully waxing lyrical about absolutely nothing. Now totally high on cocaine, the huge bear goes berserk and takes off on a hyperactive murder spree. For more about Cocaine Bear and the Cocaine Bear Blu-ray release, see Cocaine Bear Blu-ray Review published by Martin Liebman on April 13, 2023 where this Blu-ray release scored 3. The pair have created a black comedy, and one that does indeed follow the wrath of a coked-up animal, but there’s little faith in the main event, with the production trying to fit in as .

Certain items can take longer to source than the estimated week, particularly during busy trading periods and may take longer to arrive at our warehouse.

There are also great set-pieces in here – the ambulance chase is the clear stand-out, with suspense and a genuine sense of urgency that is absent from the rest of the film. A longer look at some of the more gruesome sequences and how they were made, which was a lot of fun. This year’s meme given cinematic life proves to be both better and worse than any sort of expectations one may have coming to a film named ‘Cocaine Bear’.
